There are aspects of the art of inlay and the understanding of shell
that are not obvious that you should know.
Shells are made up of calcium carbonate. All shells, whether they are
from an oyster, clam or snail are built up in layers as the animal grows.
After a blank is ground out of a shell it will have one side that is
better looking than the other. The reason for this is because you are
looking at light reflected off the surface of the shell blank. The side
of the blank that was the outside of the shell will scatter the
reflected light and seem to be brighter. The other side of the blank
will gather the light and consolidate it making it appear darker and
less reflective.
We here use the best shell possible to create our line of plugs. All of
our handmade plugs are made per order. No one pair of plugs are
alike.
